Allcorn Comes From Behind, Shoots Final Round 66

bill allcorn 2011 mbp merrill lynch open

Baton Rouge, Louisiana - After a disappointing 3-over-par 75 during the 3rd round, Bill Allcorn (Abilene, TX) found himself six shots off the lead.  When you are that far back heading into the final round, as a player, all you can ask is to give yourself a chance.  Bill did just that posting a final round 6-under-par 66, which led to a one stroke victory at the 2011 MBP Merrill Lynch Open.

After a bogey on the Par 3 #2, Allcorn would rattle off seven birdies over the next twelve holes.  Four of those birdies came on a six hole stretch from holes #7-12.  Overall, he took advantage of holes #7-9 posting an 8-under-par total for all four rounds on these three holes.

Allcorn failed to make birdie on the final hole Par 5 #18 and this left the door open for 3rd round leader, Ty Capps (Palm Coast, FL), to have a chance to tie or win coming into the 72nd hole.

Capps entertained the top spot all week.  He posted back-to-back rounds of 67-67 during the 1st and 2nd rounds.  He followed that up with a 2-under-par 70 in the 3rd round, and took a two stroke lead into the final day.  However, he struggled his final 9-holes to keep up the consistent play.  After a few early bogeys, he made back-to-back birdies on hole #14 and #15 to get back to even par on his round and a share of the lead at 12-under-par.  Then came the Par 3 #17.  After a poor tee shot, he failed to get up-and-down and made bogey dropping him one shot back.  He put himself in position off the tee to make a go at the reachable Par 5 #18, but was unable to capitalize hitting his second shot into the water bordering the front part of the putting green.  His only consolation, unfortunately, was that he hit his next shot (fourth after penalty stroke) to within two feet of the hole location and an easy tap in par.

Jeremy Alcorn (Brownwood, TX) had his chances to make a run, but could never get anything going with his putter.  After opening with rounds of 67-69, he finished the final two days just 2-under-par with rounds of 70-72, an overall score of 10-under-par and alone in third place.

Robby Ormand (Austin, TX) posted the best round of the tournament with his final day 7-under-par 65.  This final round started with an eagle two at the Par 4 #1 and he never looked back.  It was his only round in the 60s, but good enough to finish alone in fourth place at 8-under-par.

Rounding out the Top 5 were Blake Trimble (Houston, TX) and Pat Grady (Broomfield, CO) who finished T5 at 7-under-par.

The MBP Merrill Lynch Open is hosted at Santa Maria Golf Club in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  The tournament is in it's ninth year and helps benefit the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center.

Addressing the Ball

(NEW Change For 2012)

A player has “addressed the ball” when he has grounded his club immediately in front of or immediately behind the ball, whether or not he has taken his stance. Therefore, the Rules generally no longer provide for a player addressing the ball in a hazard.
