Nelson Rallies From Five Back to Win

ryan nelson - 2011 alexandria awards

Alexandria, Louisiana - Ryan Nelson (Houston, TX) finished right where he left off last year on the Adams Golf Pro Tour Series.  The 2010 POY shot a final round 8-under-par 64 to come from behind and win by one shot at 15-under-par in the 2011 Coca-Cola Walmart Open.

After rounds of 69-69-71, Nelson was five shots behind heading into the final day.  He would make up ground fairly quickly.  He went out at 4-under-par 32 on the front nine, and then made birdies at holes #12, 14, and 16.  He would par hole #17 and put himself in position to make birdie at #18.

Nelson said "I watched the playoff here on hole #18 back in 2009.  The hole was in a similar location back then.  I remember watching Jonathan Moore make a putt that was similar to what i had today; so I had a pretty good idea of the break."  That little bit of a guide may have helped.  Nelson made the 15-foot birdie putt on the final hole to take the lead, and eventually win this year's event.

Dodge Kemmer (Mountain View, CA) had a chance late in his round to tie or take the lead.  However, he failed to make birdie on the par 5 hole #16 and then could not get up-and-down on the par 3 hole #17 and made bogey. He would finish one shot behind Nelson.  Along with Kemmer, Bronson Burgoon (The Woodlands, TX) and Drew Lethem (Overland Park, KS) finished in a three-way tie for second place at 14-under-par.

Franklin Corpening (Fort Worth, TX) shot rounds of 68-68 during the third and fourth rounds, respectively, to finish alone in fifth place at 13-under-par.

Side Note:  Jaxon Brigman (Abilene, TX) was disqualified during the final round due to playing with illegal groove wedges.

The Coca-Cola Walmart Open is presented by Million Air of Alexandria and is hosted at OakWing Golf Club in Alexandria, Louisiana.  The tournament is in it's eighth year and benefits the Children's Miracle Network and the CHRISTUS Cabrini Foundation.

Addressing the Ball

(NEW Change For 2012)

A player has “addressed the ball” when he has grounded his club immediately in front of or immediately behind the ball, whether or not he has taken his stance. Therefore, the Rules generally no longer provide for a player addressing the ball in a hazard.
